Bumpy Tax Landing — When federal airline excise taxes temporarily expired this summer, the IRS initially indicated that passengers who purchased their tickets before July 23, 2011, for travel scheduled after July 22, 2011, would be reimbursed for those taxes. But then it had a change of heart. However, the IRS subsequently announced that taxpayers who took flights during the two-week shutdown weren't eligible for refunds.
ADA Claim — In a new case, a loyal customer of White Castle is suing the hamburger chain in federal court. The customer, who weighs 290 pounds, alleges that the restaurants violate the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) because the booths are too small to accommodate overweight people. He is seeking to have larger booths constructed, plus unspecified damages. The case will test the boundaries of ADA protection.
